Fight (Velocity #2) by Molly McLain Excerpt

Book Description

The story continues...

I trusted Colton with every bit of myself. I believed him when he promised he’d never hurt me. But he broke me…and now I watch him give another woman everything I thought would be mine.

I never saw this coming.

I don’t blame Taylor for the decisions she’s made, because I know the fault is all mine. I took her for granted. I broke her heart.

But she’s everything to me. If the guy holding her now thinks for one second I’ll lay down without a fight, he’s dead wrong.

Because I’m coming after what’s mine.

Excerpt

“Don’t think this means you’re off the hook. I’m just too exhausted to tell you how I really feel.” Taylor tugs me through her apartment, pausing only to grab a pillow and blanket from the couch. I don’t complain. Not only did she let me in, she’s touching me, too.

“Fair enough,” I say, glancing around. The place is definitely a man cave, with a few of her things scattered throughout. It’s not a bad set up, by any means, but it’s obviously his. And I fucking hate it.

“Where’s your roommate?” Since I’m pretty sure he’s the prick who answered her phone last night, I should probably do a little recon.

“Crap.” Taylor stops short in the hall and drops my hand likes it on fire. “He ran out for a minute.”

I don’t like the pink creeping into her cheeks, but I bite my tongue.

“He’s bringing lunch.” She swallows hard. “For the two of us.”

Yep, it’s official—this guy and I are never going to be friends. I keep my mouth shut, though. I don’t have a leg to stand on and I’m damn lucky she didn’t slam the door in my face. I’m sure as hell not going to give her a reason to wish she had.

“Have you eaten?” she asks quietly, and I nod.

“Grabbed breakfast at O’Hare.”

“Good.” She nibbles on her lower lip, looking everywhere but at me. Why?

“You all right?” I’m not sure I want to know what’s going on in her pretty head, but again…I didn’t come all this way to be an ass. I met my quota on that front months ago. “If you’ve changed your mind…”

“No,” she replies quickly. “No, it’s fine. I just…” Her eyes flash to mine for a second. A second just long enough for me to get the point—she’s hiding something. “I don’t want to be rude. Adam’s been really sweet through all of this.”

Sweet? I just fucking bet. “You told him about me?”

“Yeah, Col.” This time, she’s less uncertain. More determined. “I needed someone to talk to while you were living it up with your girlfriend.”

“She’s not my girlfriend.”

“Whatever, Col.”

“Maybe I should meet this guy, then. Thank him for looking after you.”

The color in her cheeks goes as dark as her lips in an instant, and it’s everything I can do not to grunt like a fucking caveman. I’m the guy she’s supposed to open up to. The one who’s supposed to know all of her secrets, not some guy she’s been shacking up for less than a goddamn month.

Suddenly, the door swings open and the smell of food proceeds the bulky dude carrying it in. “Honey, I’m home,” he calls out with a sly grin on his face. A grin that fades the moment he spots me. “Well, shit, Tay, I didn’t know we had company.”

Tay? It’s Tee, motherfucker.

Not a Hero by Sarah Robinson

Book Description
From the bestselling author of the Kavanagh Legends MMA series, Sarah Robinson's Not A Hero is an emotional standalone military romance where love battles trauma, and there can only be one victor. Former Marine, Miles Kydd, is trying to readjust to civilian life after ending his career and returning to his small home town when he learned his father was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Once the town hero and star quarterback, Miles no longer feels like the man he was, or who he's expected to be--possibly because his demons have followed him home from Afghanistan.

Meeting Zoe Brooke, his father's live-in nurse, gives Miles the slightest glimmer of hope that he can still find happiness despite the dark secrets he holds inside. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and together they are explosive--in more ways than one.

A helper at her core, Zoe is more than willing to care for Miles's heart, but not at the expense of her own, and she's not afraid to tell him that. She knows what having a painful past is like, and she wants to help him with his, if he'll let her.

Things get complicated fast when Miles realizes burying his secrets isn't actually the same as healing from them and if he wants the girl, he's going to have to tell her the truth--the one thing he can't do.

This book is suggested for 18+ years of age, contains graphic content, sensitive subject matters, and sexually explicit material.

AVAILABLE: October 4, 2016

Miles Kydd is finally returning home after eight years in the Marines.  He is returning to the only home he has ever known.  Everything is the same, but everything is different.  Miles isn't the same man he was when he joined the military right out of high school.  He has seen and done things that will haunt him forever.  But he is determined to just put it out of his mind and focus on his sick father.  However, Miles doesn't except to meet Zoe Brooke, his father's live-in nurse.  Or that she could give him a glimmer of hope against the darkness inside of him.

Zoe knows all to well that the past can haunt you and be painful.  And she sees that pain in Miles every time she looks in his eyes.  And she is more than willing to be there for him, but not at the expense of her sanity.

But the closer Miles and Zoe get, the harder and harder it gets for Miles to open up to the one person that has become his calm in the storm.  And if he can't open up to Zoe and share his pain, he is going to lose her for good.

Not A Hero is a beautiful, emotional, sexy, and sweet story about two people learning to deal with past horrors.  Not A Hero made me cry, laugh, and steamed up my kindle at 2 am!! I couldn't put this book down.  And to be honest, it was probably a good thing my husband fell asleep on the couch watching football because otherwise he would of woken up to me crying a few times.  **awkward**

I highly recommend this author and if you haven't read her Kavanagh series, GO READ IT!! =]

Don't Tempt Me by Lori Foster

Book Description

Love comes along when it's least wanted

Jason Guthrie has no time for entanglements—between helping out his widowed brother and teenage nephew and getting his hometown back on its feet, his days are spoken for. But his nights are another story… And when his lovely new neighbor, Honor Brown, reluctantly accepts his help in remodeling her house, Jason finds himself wishing his handyman skills could knock down the defenses she keeps building around herself.

Martial arts teacher Sullivan Dean knows real danger when he sees it—even when it takes the form of the gorgeous blonde helping her friend move in across the street. After putting his wayward past behind him to focus on teaching control to troubled kids, Sullivan has learned to avoid party girls like Lexie Perkins. But Sullivan can't seem to keep his hands off the real woman behind that flirty charm—or keep his heart from landing at her feet…

AVAILABLE: July 26, 2016

Don't Tempt Me is the first book in Lori Foster's new Guthrie Brothers series.  I thought this was a sweet, easy read.  I enjoyed these characters.  This book focuses more on Jason and Honor's relationship then Sullivan and Lexie's.

Honor moves into a "fixer-upper" in a up-and-coming neighborhood.  She is used to doing things on her own.  So when her (hot) new neighbor (Jason), his brother, and his nephew offer to help, she is shocked and a little reluctant to accept their help.  Honor is determined to improve her home and make it her own.  And that (stubborn) determination is something that Jason definitely takes notice to.  Eventually Jason is able to earn Honor's trust and she beings to let him in.

There is a side romance between Honor's best friend, Lexie, and her (other) new neighbor Sullivan.  I thought their romance was sweet, but I felt their's was a little rushed.  I kinda wish they had their own separate story.
The thing I loved the most about this book was the overall sense of community and friendship that was at the heart of Don't Tempt Me.

Pantry Dropper by Jade Sinner

Book Description

A one-night stand. That’s all Ashlyn Shepherd is to me.

I’ve spent the last five years trying to convince myself that statement is true.
But saying it doesn’t make it so.

She’s the one who slipped away in the middle of the night. The one who—after only one night together—took my heart when she left. Literally, she’s the one who got away.

I hate the way she consumes my every thought, even after all this time.
I hate the way I dream of her every night.
I hate the way I look for her in every crowd.
But mostly I hate how I can’t forget her. Not even a little bit.

We were separated by cruel circumstances and now fate has returned her to me. But everything has changed. She isn’t that carefree girl I met five years ago.

I see so much pain behind her eyes. So much uncertainty. But one thing remains unchanged.

I still want her.

She. Will. Be. Mine.

AVAILABLE: July 28, 2016

Okay... This "review" is going to be more of a rant then a review.  I DID NOT like anything about this novella.  I did not find this book to be "sexy" and it didn't make me "blush" in any way.  What I DID DO was roll my eyes continuously and several (unlady-like) snorts.  I found Panty Dropper to be ridiculous and a waste of the 40-ish minutes it took me to read this. This is the second Jade Sinner novella I've read and I haven't liked either one, so I hate to say it, but I won't be reading anymore by these authors.

My MAJOR problem with this story was lack of "safe sex".  I find it completely irresponsible to not even think about condoms, birth control, STD's, and unplanned pregnancy.  Listen, do what you want, when you want, and however much you want.  That's not my issue.  Just be safe and protect yourself.  The heroine was a NURSE and she give a second thought about it.  WHAT?????

And the insta-love... ughhhhhhhhhhhhh.  I don't always mind "insta-love" stories.  But again, I found this whole book ridiculous.  This didn't even come across as "love".  Insta-lust, maybe.  The Hero and heroine had a drunkin' one-night stand 5 years ago, hadn't seen each other since, but were in love with each other the whole time?!?  No.  Just...

No.

**eye roll**

I had another issue with this book.  I have had shoulder surgery.  There is NO FREAKING WAY I was thinking about and/or wanting sex within hours (or days/weeks) of waking up from anesthesia.  Shoulder surgery is no fun and painful.  And the recovery is not easy.  I mean, I couldn't even wash my hair, change my clothes, or get out of my chair without help.
I found this whole book to be completely ridiculous.
Don't waste your time.

Teaser: Bad Judgment by Meghan March

Book Description

He’s so arrogant.

She’s so self-righteous.
I can’t stand him.

I want her.
He’s a distraction I don’t need.

She’ll say yes eventually because I’m not giving up.

Justine Porter is stuck between a rock and a stripper pole. She lost her law school scholarship, which means she has two choices to keep her life on track: strip for her tuition or tutor the most distractingly sexy guy in her class—the one she’s been turning down for two years straight. It should be an easy choice, but tutoring Ryker Grant could derail her plans to graduate with honors faster than two-for-one night at the Déjà Vu. Then again, topless has never really been her color.

She could take the easy road, just this once . . . but the deal has enough loopholes to trip anyone up.

Who knew they taught bad judgment in law school?

Cover Reveal: The Sexy One by Lauren Blakely

Releasing October 17th, THE SEXY ONE will bring readers more of Simon, the hot single dad you met in MISTER O.

Book Description

Let me count the ways why falling into forbidden love is not my wisest move…
1. She works with me every single day.
Did I mention she's gorgeous, sweet, kind and smart?
2. She works in my home.
Playing with my five-year-old daughter. Teaching my little girl. Cooking for my princess. Which means…
3. She's the nanny.
And that makes her completely off-limits…But it doesn’t stop me from wanting her. All of her.

***

The other nannies in this city don't call him the Sexy One for nothing. My boss, the amazingly wonderful single father to the girl I take care of every day is ridiculously hot, like movie star levels with those arms, and those eyes, and that body. Not to mention, the way he dotes on his little girl melts me all over. But what really makes my knees weak are the times when his gaze lingers on me. In secret. When no one else is around.

I can't risk my job for a chance at something more…can I? But I don’t know how to resist him much longer either…

Rescuing Emily by Susan Stoker

Book Description

Renting out the apartment over his garage shouldn't be a life-changing decision, but when Delta soldier Cormac "Fletch" Fletcher meets Emily Grant, he feels an instant connection. He can't stand the thought of Emily and her young daughter living anywhere unsafe. Offering cheap rent is a small price to pay for their safety…and Fletch's peace of mind.

Being a single mother is difficult at best, but renting the extremely affordable space from Fletch makes Emily's life a lot easier…until it doesn't. Suddenly all the money she's saving thanks to Fletch's generosity is going into the hands of a blackmailer. And what little food Emily can afford goes to her daughter Annie, so the girl doesn't go to bed hungry…leaving Emily weaker and weaker.

When miscommunication has Emily assuming Fletch is in on the blackmail, he not only has to gain her trust, but also deal with a man holding a grudge against Fletch and his entire Delta Force team. A task made more difficult when the dangerous man gets his hands on Emily and Annie...

** Rescuing Emily is the 2nd book in the Delta Force Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

Delta Force Heroes Series
Rescuing Rayne (Book 1)
Rescuing Emily (Book 2)
Rescuing Harley (Book 3) *Available November 2016

I've been on a pretty good book role (for the most part) with the last group of books I've read/reviews.  And Rescuing Emily was no different.  This is the second book in Susan Stoker's Delta Force Heroes series.  Each book can be read as a stand-alone, HOWEVER, I think that you would get much more enjoyment if you read these books in order.  (Rescuing Rayne is the first book in this series.)  You really will get the feel and sense of brothership the Delta team has together.

Emily Grant is desperate to find a safer place to live for her and her six-year old daughter, Annie.  And she thinks she finds it when she stumbles upon the ad for an apartment for rent by Cormac "Fletch" Fletcher (and for a GREAT price), Emily finally feels that she can breathe a little...

Until she can't.

When a stranger, claiming to be friends with Fletch, threatens and blackmails Emily, she begins to feel that moving wasn't that saving grace that she thought it was.  She pulls away from her budding relationship with Fletch and struggles to feed her daughter.

When Fletch first meet Emily, he felt an instant connection with her.  He has never felt this instant connection with someone before and struggles to stay away from her.  When he finally decides that he wants to explore the feelings that he has, Emily begins to pull away and he doesn't know why.

But when Emily gets sick and Fletch finally discovers why she has been avoiding him, he becomes determined to earn her trust and eliminate the threat against her and Annie.  And show her how great they could be together.

For me, Emily's daughter Annie stole the show.  She was such a joy to read and see what an amazing little girl she is.  I loved how she got all those big, bad Delta boys wrapped around her little finger in an instant.  It wasn't just Fletch that realized what a special person she is and will be.  I LOVED ANNIE!!

Hitched: Volume 3 *AVAILABLE Aug 2, 2016

STOP!! If you have not read Hitched: Volume 1 yet, you NEED to go read it before continuing on with this review!! This review WILL contain spoilers from Volume 1.
So, Volume 2 starts off where Volume 1 ended.  Noah was left at the alter by his wife and doesn't know why.  He still hasn't been able to and Olivia for several days and her father won't tell him where she is.
And when Olivia finally does show back up needing Noah's help, he drops everything to help in exchange for answers.  Where has she been?  Why didn't she talk to him first?!  And most importantly, WHY would she run from him?  After all, they were in this together.  Their marriage was based on saving their father's company.  So, there was a little "baby" clause in the contract....
A little clause that Olivia seemed to have no clue about...
So how does Noah tell his (reluctant) new wife that they have to make a baby within a few months when he can't even get her to agree to get naked with him...
I loved the continuation of Noah and Olivia's story.  I can't WAIT until until Hitched: Volume 3 and the conclusion of their love story.  Hurry up August 2!!

EXCERPT

“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“Just a little tight, is all.”
I inhale through my nose. I have to shove the pregnancy stuff to the back corner of my brain. We’re a long way off from Olivia letting me pump her full of my semen anyhow, so why am I stressing about it now? The first step is showing her how compatible we can be.
And that starts now.
I smile at her. “Sit tight. I’ll be right back.”
I grab a bottle of massage oil from the hall closet and return to the living room. The soft jazz music seems to float in the air, creating a pleasant buzz in the atmosphere.
Olivia’s eyes widen when I rejoin her on the couch, but she doesn’t question me.
“I’ll give you a massage,” I suggest. “Take off your sweatshirt.”
Olivia flinches, chewing on her lip while she watches me. “But I’m not wearing anything underneath.”
That’s the idea. “I promise not to look.”
She hesitates for another second, then turns her back to me and pulls her shirt over her head, dropping it to the floor. The creamy canvas in front of me is one to be admired. The twin dimples in her lower back near the band of her leggings would make lesser men weep.
I warm a few drops of oil between my palms and rest my hands on her stiff shoulders.
“Relax. Okay?”

The Sapphire Affair (Book 1)
The Sapphire Heist (Book 2) *Available August 16
Bounty Hunter Jake Harlowe is down in the Cayman Islands searching for $10 million dollars that was stolen from a hedge-fund by the company's ex-CEO.  It is believed that the ex-CEO smuggled the money out of the country by buying up expensive art, then transporting it to the islands.  Jake thinks is going to be a simple job: find the art, bring the ex-CEO down, and bring the money back to the swindled hedge-fund.  What he doesn't expect, and the last thing he needs, is to meet a beautiful woman in a bar.
Steph Anderson went down to the Cayman Islands for two reasons.  One, to build back her adventure tour business after her ex-boyfriend tried to ruin her reputation, and to see if her ex-stepfather stole money from his old company.  What she doesn't expect is to meet a sexy man in a bar.
Once Jake and Steph learn about their shared goal to find the missing money, they decide to work together.  They also agree to ignore their sizzling hot chemistry.  But working so close to someone that you want to get naked can get a little complicated (... and hot)!!
The Sapphire Affair has everything you could look for in a Lauren Blakely story.  Sexy, ex-military bounty hunter, a strong, beautiful woman, missing money, sexy-hot chemistry, and possible betrayal.  This is a great summer read and a great start to the Jewel series.  I can't wait to read the rest of their story in The Sapphire Heist (available Aug. 16).

EXCERPT
She cut him off, slicing her hand through the air. “No. No. No. And more no. Did you not hear me? The sex-toy mistress practically clung to me, and then I was very nearly subjected to a discussion of Eli’s predilections.” She dragged a hand through her hair in frustration. “I did not find the bowlful of diamonds, so we’ll have to go back again, and my champagne buzz is nearly gone, so I could really use a Cherry Popsicle.”
“Is that code for a ruby-encrusted—”
“No. There’s a bar along the beach that serves frozen cherry margaritas and they’re called Cherry Popsicles because they’re made around a frozen block of cherry ice, and when you get to the end you can suck on the Popsicle in the middle of it, and if I do not get one stat, my brain will be permanently branded with images of my stepfather’s fiancée holding that thing,” she said, gesturing wildly at the black pouch.
“Fair enough. To the Cherry Popsicle purveyor we go. Do they have ice cream? I do love a good ice-cream cone.”
“I’ll find you ice cream, Jake.”
“By the way, what’s a bandage dress? Is that like a dress made out of Band Aids?”
She heaved a sigh. “No. It’s a style. It’s very clingy and tight, but the fabric is sturdy,” she said, stopping to point to her breasts as if to show how a bandage dress would hug her curves.
He cleared his throat, and when she looked up, she saw him looking down.
At her boobs.
“I forgot. You’re a boob starer. Didn’t mean to tempt you, since you’re trying to stay on the wagon.”
He held up his hands in mock surrender. “One, you say that like it’s a bad thing. Two, you have fantastic breasts. And three, do you blame me? You were waving your hands in front of them. I had no choice but to stare at them.”

Ashton by Jade Sinner

Book Description

Ashton

Friendship—forever and always.

Sex—never.

That is our agreement. Besides, I'm not looking for sex. I get lots of sex! I'm also not looking for forever. I'm a now kind of man.

Jess has been my best friend since we were dirty faced kids finding trouble around every corner. We are the kind of friends who are always there for one another, through thick and thin, the one who knows each other's secrets and dreams. That can't change just because we've both grown up, or because she's beautiful, funny, smart and quick witted.

Until it does.

One call, one night. That won't change are agreement...then again, agreements can be amended, right?

Jess

Ashton is a manwhore. I've heard all his stories and despite them all, I love him.

Not the passionate love. I've never looked at him like that—like the cocky, confident, sexy, man he's become. Because to me, he's just Ashton, my best friend—until one night.

One night when I learn that the rumors are true, that in reality, they don't do him justice. His mad skills are off the charts. Yet, that can't change our agreement. One night has to be enough.
It has to be.

I'm not giving up my best friend for crazy hot lovemaking. But then again, do I have to?

Read this fun, predictable, short, hot, and steamy book and learn how friendship can become more! Ashton The Agreement, is a standalone with a guaranteed HEA. Don't miss your next bookgasm.

AVAILABLE: July 14, 2016

Like the description of this book said...  This is a VERY PREDICABLE, short read.  However, for me, I didn't really feel the "hot and steamy" part of this book.  It's just hard for me to into a book (that is so short) when best friends that have no previous crushes/feelings (other than platonic friendship) go from zero to sixty in one night...
Literally one night.
This book just wasn't for me.

Searching for Harmony by Kelly Elliott

Book Description

Firefighter and first responder Preston Ward thought he had grown immune to the job's emotional burns. But when he goes out on a particularly tragic call, he realizes that some scenes are too devastating to forget. And yet, if it weren't for that terrible night, he never would have met the woman who makes him want to risk his heart.

More than once, Harmony Banks has watched her perfectly ordered world torn apart by fate. Now she's finding out that what she lost wasn't as perfect as she thought—and it's tearing her apart. The only thing that keeps her going is the kindness of a stranger: the firefighter who saved her life the night everything changed.

Preston isn't like the men who have come before. For one thing, he's far more genuine. And the love Harmony feels growing between them is almost too intense for her wounded soul. But if she and Preston can push past heartbreak, they'll find that something incredible awaits in each other's arms.

AVAILABLE: July 12, 2016
Preston Ward met Harmony Banks the day she lost everything.  After being a firefighter for several years, Preston thought he became immune to the emotional tolls of his job.  But he can't shake Harmony or the complete devastation in her eyes while she begged him to save her son.  Preston watches from the wings as Harmony struggles to get her life back together.
The pair eventually forms a friendship which leads to deeper feelings developing.  Preston is ready to take the chance at loving Harmony, but is Harmony?  She still struggles with moving past the betrayal of her late husband and the loss of her son.  Preston is able to be the calming force in Harmony's life, but can she allow herself to risk her heart again...
This is a book about grief, moving on, and finding that inner strength to move on.  As a mother and a wife, I cannot (nor do I want to) imagine the heart-wrenching pain of losing your family in one moment.  The guilt of living when your son and husband did not.  And learning to cope with the pain and learn that life goes on.  And sometimes life after loss can surprise you...
RATING: 4.5 out of 5

EXCERPT

“Hey, Harmony! How is it going?”

Spinning around, I plastered a fake smile on my face. I was so exhausted. Even attempting to act happy was a feat in itself.

Mitchel walked up and his smile faded the moment he looked into my eyes. “Hey, Mitchel. Is um . . . is Preston working today?”

Mitchel’s face tightened as he looked at me. “Are you okay, Harmony?”
My eyes stung with the threat of tears. Nothing had been okay since three weeks ago when Preston walked out of my condo after holding me all night long. Or the look on his face when he saw me with my boss at that restaurant.
“I just need to talk to—” my voice cracked and I hated how vulnerable I was feeling. So tired. I’m just so tired.

“Harmony?”

Closing my eyes, I let his voice penetrate my body before opening them again and seeing him. Preston.

Mitchel stepped out of the way and Preston stood there in front of me. Pressing my lips together tightly, I fought like hell not to be attracted to him. His brown hair was a mess and I could guess why. He couldn’t keep his damn hands out of his hair. His eyes looked so tired and sad. It was as if I was looking into a mirror.

Without saying a word, I walked up to him and threw myself into his body. Preston’s arms quickly wrapped me up and I felt like I could breathe for the first time in weeks.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

My body sagged as he held me up. Hearing him call me baby was more than I could take. I wasn’t sure how long I could keep fighting the intense pull Preston had on me.

“Preston,” I sobbed into his chest.

Pulling back, Preston placed his hands on the sides of my face and brushed his thumbs across my cheeks. “Harmony, what happened?” Preston’s chest was heaving and my heart felt full knowing he was so concerned about me.

“I . . . need . . . you. This is crazy . . . but I need—” My voice cracked and I buried my face into his chest as I said, “Preston, please take me home. Please.”

Not two seconds later I was in his arms as he carried me to his car. Setting me down, I dropped my head back against his seat. I didn’t dare look at him for fear I would spill my heart out about my feelings for him.

No. I just need to sleep. Then I can think clearly.

Hot breath touched my neck as I sucked in a breath of air. “Harmony, I need to grab my stuff. I’ll be right back, baby.”

Nodding, I tried to memorize the sound of my name coming off his lips.
