Hidden Heat by Carla Swafford

Book Description

Cassidy Ryder refuses to be intimidated by anyone, even the hell-raising, hard-drinking Brothers of Mayhem. The daughter of their former president, she's not above smashing a few heads to keep her teenage brother safe. But when Cassidy's big mouth gets her in trouble, the only thing that saves her is some quick thinking from the Brothers' bartender. He's commanding and strong, and as smooth as the whiskey he pours: the ultimate temptation for a girl who swore she'd never be a biker's plaything.

But Thorn Savalas is no ordinary biker. He's a cop, and he's worked too hard earning the Brothers' trust to blow his cover over a female—even one who rocks a pair of jeans like Cassidy. The only way to protect her is by claiming she's his old lady. Trouble is, Thorn can't just pretend. He wants Cassidy, and every scorching touch tells him she feels the same. But acting on their hottest fantasies could leave them both exposed . . . even if nothing else has ever felt so real.

Brothers of Mayham Series
Hidden Heat (Book 1)

Hidden Heat is the first in Carla Swafford's new Brother's of Mayham series.  This was also the first book I've read by this author.  I thought Hidden Heat was just okay to me.  At times, it felt rushed and information was just thrown at you (seemingly coming from nowhere) and other times if felt like it was dragging.  There seemed to be no middle ground.

Cassidy Ryder is just trying to get her little brother out of the Brothers of Mayham grasp.  She KNOWS the trouble this motorcycle gang is having grown up as the daughter of the former president.  But when her attitude gets her into trouble, the only one that can help her is a Brothers bartender, Thorn Savalas.

Only Thorn isn't your typical Brother of Mayham member.  He is an undercover cop trying to bring the biker gang down.  But when Cassidy comes into his bar looking for trouble, he gets more than he has bargained for and the only way to protect her is to make everyone believe he claimed her as his "old lady".  She has gotten them mixed up in some dangerous stuff and he can't decide if he wants to strangle her or f*ck her.

But they can only play pretend so long, and as real feelings develop the danger gets closer...

One thing that annoyed me with Cassidy, is that while she is EXTREMELY loyal to her brother and seems to be willing to do anything to protect him, there were times throughout the book that weren't about protecting him.  She just was out of control and pissy with MEN THAT COULD/WOULD KILL HER.  She seemed to have no self-control or common-sense in that department.

Across the Hall by Kyile Walker was a quick read with a little bit of a romantic curve ball thrown in.  This was the first book I've read by this author, and while I overall enjoyed this book, there were times where I thought these twenty-something characters seemed a little immature.  And as their feelings get deeper, secrets are exposed and lines are crossed and the truth has a funny way of ALWAYS coming out.

Jude Falken is trying to get his life back after spending two years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.  As part of his release six months early for good behavior, he has one month of house arrest.  Luckily for him, he has the money to get a nice apartment and is able to spend his house arrest comfortably in his new home.  He also discovers that his old college friend (and his little sister) live across the hall from him.

Jillian Warren is FINALLY home from her internship in Paris.  She missed Manhattan and her big brother.  But Jillian has some other motivation for returning home... a summer romance that left her feeling devastated and betrayed.  Jillian is steering clear of men.  But their new neighbor has left her intrigued.    Her brother has warned her to stay away from him, but she can't deny her attraction to her new neighbor.

As Jude and Jillian explore their new attraction/relationship, secrets are exposed and their new relationship is put to the test when Jillian's past comes calling.

I liked this book.  The sexy times were hot, I just felt that it went from zero to hundred in a blink of an eye.  I wish the emotional relationship between Jude and Jillian was a little more developed, especially given their recent experiences.  I still think you will enjoy this book if you like "best friend falling for best friend's little sister" storylines.

The Final Seven by Erica Spindler

Book Description

The first Saturday in July. . .
A missing coed . . .
The number seven carved into her door . . .
The countdown has begun.

New Orleans Detective Micki Dee Dare is a seasoned, no-nonsense cop. She doesn't need a partner, especially not Zach “Hollywood” Harris, an irreverent charmer, fresh out of an experimental FBI program. And her assignment — keep him alive while he fights crime using the special skills he brings to the table — is not what she signed up for. But the die has been cast and there's nothing she can do about it.

Micki soon realizes there's more to her partner than meets the eye—and more at stake than catching bad guys and closing cases. There’s a new kind of evil at work the Crescent City, more cunning, more powerful than any she’s ever encountered. And she and Zach may be the only ones who can stop it.

As another coed goes missing and the darkness closes in, Micki must face a terrifying truth: this time she might not make it. This time the evil they’re facing might destroy them all . . .

Full of surprise twists and unexpected turns, The Final Seven is a heart-pounding thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.

The Lightkeepers Series
The Final Seven (Book 1)

The Final Seven is the first book in Erica Spindle's new The Lightkeepers series.  It is different from any of the other Erica Spindle book's I've read because it brings in a little paranormal aspect to it, which I thought worked really well.  This book was definitely different then the books that I have been reading lately, which I think was part of why I enjoyed it so much.  Can't wait to see what else happens with Micki and Zach.

NOPD Detective Micki Dare is a tough no nonsense cop who doesn't need a partner to do her job.  But when her captain assigns her with "Detective" Jach Harris, she has something to say about it.  But Zach isn't your normal detective.  He is part of the FBI's secret program called the Sixers, where people have certain "abilities" that go beyond the normal five senses (Sight, Taste, Smell, Touch, and Hearing).  Micki's job: keep Zach alive (aka babysit) while they investigate missing co-eds.

But there is a darkness setting it's sights on New Orleans and Micki and Zach are fighting an invisible force determined to snuff out the light.  The Final Seven is a story of light vs. the darkness and putting trust in your partner before the darkness wins.

Fighting Dirty by Lori Foster

Book Description

He's the hottest MMA fighter in the game, but one woman is ready to try out a few steamy moves of her own in an unforgettable new novel from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster...

With the life he's led and the muscles he's gained, Armie Jacobson isn't afraid of anything. Except maybe Merissa Colter's effect on him. It's not just that she's his best friend's little sister. Fact is, she deserves better. Women pursue him for one night of pleasure, and that's all he wants to offer. Until rescuing Merissa from a robbery leads to the most erotic encounter of his life.

Good girl meets bad boy. It's a story that rarely ends well. But Merissa is taking matters into her own hands. No matter how he views himself, the Armie she knows is brave, honorable and completely loyal. And as past demons and present-day danger collide, they're both about to learn what's truly worth fighting for…

Ultimate Series
Hard Knocks (Book .5)
No Limits (Book 1)
Holding Strong (Book 2)
Tough Love (Book 3)
Fighting Dirty (Book 4)

It's the story we've all be waiting for!!  ARMIE IS HERE!!! Fighting Dirty is the last book in Lori Foster's Ultimate Series.  If you haven't read any of this series, I completely recommend starting from the beginning.  I think you would miss out on the who's and why's behind the characters/relationships/people you skip around.  I am sad to see this tight group of friends move on... Hopefully we will get to revisit them again in future books!!

I have to be honest... I was actually nervous to read Fighting Dirty.  I've been waiting (not-so) patiently for Armie and Merissa's story since reading No Limits.  What if it didn't live up to my expectations in my head?  What if Armie wasn't a good leading man??  My poor brain was coming up with all kinds of questions/scenarios as to what could go wrong with Armie's story.  But my nerves were quickly calmed when I started this book.

From the beginning of this series, you've known there was more to Armie Jacobson than his outlandish man-whoring ways.  You've also known he has wanted Merissa Colter (BAD), but he doesn't feel that he deserves her.  Plus her big brother is Armie's best friend and knows everything about his dark past and probably wouldn't appreciate Armie tainting her with his dirty laundry. Armie couldn't handle if Merissa treated him any different if/when she learned the truth about him.  So he tries to forget his CRAVINGS for Merissa with mind-numbing sex, the kinky-er the better.  But when Merissa is in danger, will Armie be able to deny his feelings for the ONE woman that he always knew was more...

After being kissed senseless by Armie and pushed away AGAIN, Merissa can take a hint.  Even though she's been in love with him since she was a teenager, Rissy can't take being pushed away anymore and seeing him with other women.  She has been slowly coming to terms that her and Armie will never be together, when suddenly her life takes a major turn.  After being threatened at work, Armie is willing to do anything to protect her.  And all to soon their chemistry is becoming to much to deny for either of them...

But will Armie drop his walls enough to let Rissy in, or will he push her away to protect her... even if that means protecting her from himself.

The ONLY thing I wish this book had was an epilogue ESPECIALLY since this was the last book in the series.  But again, hopefully we will get to "see" these characters again in Ms. Foster's spin-off series coming soon! =]

COUNTRY BLUES SERIES
You're Still the One (Book 1)

You're Still the One by Rachel Harris is the first in her new Country Blues series.  This was also the first book I've read by this author and I most definitely won't be my last.  I thought You're Still the One was incredibly sweet and charming.  I LOVED Charlie and Arabella (what a pretty name) together.  This was a story of family and friendship, overcoming ones fear, and finding YOUR passion.

Arabella Stone has summer-bucket-list for her summer away from home.  First on the list: Flirt with the man she's had a crush on since she was a teenager, Charlie Tucker.  The rest: drink a beer in a biker bar, get a tattoo, learn a country two-step, ask a stranger for his number, experience a two-curling kiss, do a random act of kindness, go skinny-dipping, stare at herself naked in the mirror, and find her passion.  This is her chance to get out of her comfort zone and experience things she's never dared to do at home.  Only, she doesn't expect to see Charlie again (so soon) after performing her kiss-and-run.

Charlie is determined to stay out of the spotlight and figure out how to get his new charity up and running this summer.  When his boss asks him to watch out for his daughter who has an internship at the studio Charlie JUST bought, Charlie has to agree to please his boss.  But when he discovers that Arabelle was his kiss-and-run girl, he finds it hard to keep his distance and stay professional with her.

The romance between Charlie and Arabella (Ella) is slow building in all the right ways.  You always feel their chemistry and attraction towards each other but they (mostly Charlie) refuse to act on it.  This was a really sweet read and look forward to reading more by this author.

Power Play by Sophia Henry

Book Description

post signatureBeneath her innocent facade, Gabriella Bertucci has her reasons to be standoffish with guys. Especially guys like Landon Taylor, a star defenseman on the minor-league Detroit Pilots and the object of a serious crush since he first walked into her family's market. But when Landon comes through for her in a moment of crisis, Gaby starts to wonder if there might be more to Landon than hard muscles and fast skates.

Landon isn't afraid of telling Gaby that he's got it for her bad. The problem is, she seems unwilling to believe it. And though Landon enjoys his reputation as a cool-headed athlete, he hates losing—both on the rink and off. It's his competitiveness that makes him so damn good at what he does . . . but it also makes him just a little bit complicated.

One minute Gaby's tempted to give in; the next, she's getting cold feet. How can she trust a guy who's destined for bigger and better things to stick around? Then again, when Landon pulls her close with those powerful arms, the only thing that matters is right now.

PILOTS HOCKEY
Delayed Penalty (Book 1)
Power Play (Book 2)
Interference (Book 3) *Available June 2016

Power Play is the second book in Sophia Henry's Pilots Hockey series.  Each book can be considered a stand alone since each focuses on a different couple.  That being said, this was my first book by Sophia Henry and I'm not sure I'll read anymore from her.

This is going to be somewhat of a rant-y review... (just FYI if I say some "spoilers")

I don't think I've disliked a WHOLE book of characters as much in Power Play.  I mean, usually there are one or two that I find uber annoying, but this was a WHOLE BOOK OF THEM!!! I didn't like ANYONE. ANYONE!!!!  I thought Gaby's parent's were cruel in an unusual way and blamed her for being raped three years ago.  They were condescending/patronizing towards her with her meds and acted like she was going to go on a killing spree without them.  It was obnoxious how they treated her, and as a reader, I didn't appreciate it.

You can definitely tell these main characters are young... They were immature, selfish, whiny, and very, very (IMO) annoying.  Landon is an ADULT man-child jealous of the fact that his parents adopted two orphan twins... This twenty-something is jealous that his parents don't pay enough attention to him... REALLY?!?!?!?!?  I would understand being jealous if he was a) an only child AND b) A CHILD!!  As for Gaby, I am sympathetic about what she has gone through, but I found her to be an incredibly WEAK person.  It takes a lot of strength to make it through what she did and come out of it, but she had no faith/confidence in herself.  She NEVER stood up to her parents for treating her like an invalid.

It was just overall a hard to read.  I'm actually surprised I bothered finishing it.

Nothing Like Love by Abigail Strom

Book Description

Simone Oliver prides herself on being a realist and a cynic. A brilliant set designer for a Manhattan theater company, she thrives in the background and is perfectly comfortable in jeans, Chuck Taylors, and a paint-smeared T-shirt. That is, until Zach Hammond, the award-winning (and sexy-as-hell) British director, turns the spotlight on her. He’s clearly captivated by her and won’t take no for an answer—but Simone is determined to maintain her position that love’s not worth the risk.
A hopeless romantic who can quote Shakespeare on a whim, Zach has spent his life center stage, surrounded by world-famous actors and royalty. But nothing he’s seen can compare to what Simone can create. Before long, he finds himself as mesmerized by her brash beauty as he is by her work, and he’s determined to seduce her stubborn heart.
But while the two may have been successful at relegating romance to the wings in New York, when their production moves to a centuries-old Irish castle in County Clare, there may be just enough magic to give true love the curtain call it deserves.

AVAILABLE: February 16, 2016

Set designer Simone Oliver doesn't believe in Happily-ever-afters, White-knights, Prince Charmings, or love conquering all.  Nope.  It's not for her and she is okay with that.  She is okay having a lifetime of friendships and (hopefully) hot sex well into the retirement home.  She's never even been tempted for more...

...until she meets her theater's temporary director (and her Hollywood crush) Zach Hammond.

Zach Hammond is the exact opposite of Simone in that he DOES believe in romance and all that it involves.  He just never thought in-your-face Simone Oliver would be it for him.  But what can he do when the one woman he wants to ROMANCE wants nothing to do with it??

One a side note, I didn't partially like the ending of this book.  I thought it made Simone look bad.  Which wasn't something that I appreciated about the Heroine of a book.

Nothing Like Love is a quick, short (kinda slow), sweet read about two people with opposing views on love and relationships coming together.  I found it lacking in the "hotness" factor between Zach and Simone.  But if you are looking for a sweet read, then you might be interested in Zach and Simone's story.

Emergency Engagement by Samanthe Beck

Book Description

Glass artist Savannah Smith expected a marriage proposal for Thanksgiving—just not from her strong, silent, super-hot neighbor. If, of course, they don’t fall in love first…

Emergency Engagement is the first book in Samanthe Beck's new Love Emergency series.

Savannah Smith is excepting a proposal this Thanksgiving... only she didn't get it from the man she was excepting it from.  A misunderstanding with her parents extends to her neighbor's parents, has Beau Montgomery asking her to play along until after the holidays so he stops disappointing his parents.

I don't want to get to much into the detail's of this book, because most of it is dealing with issues Beau has from his past, but I found once you find out the why's of Beau's desire to fake this engagement, the book became kind of dull and predictable for me.  I didn't feel any "heat" or intensity between Savannah and Beau.  I also didn't like the lengths they went to to make their parent's really believe in their lie...

This book was just below "okay" for me.

Blah, Blah, Blah.....

Heading home after another extreme mission, Keane "Ghost" Bryson hadn't planned to seduce someone during his layover, but Rayne is too sweet to resist. For the first time in his life, regret fills him as he slips away the following morning.

Both are shocked when, months later, they meet again—under the worst possible circumstances. Seems fate has given them a second chance…if they can survive the terrorist situation they're in. If Rayne can forgive Ghost his lies. And if Ghost can trust Rayne to be strong enough to endure the secrets and uncertainty that come with loving a Delta Force soldier.

Leaving Yesterday by Zoe Dawson

Book Description

Rafferty Hamilton doesn't plan on putting down roots anytime soon. With her divorce final, the hotel heiress has left Manhattan behind to scout new locations for her family's chain of resorts. Which is why it's so frustrating to be stranded in Laurel Falls while a good-looking, slow-talking, Stetson-wearing mechanic takes his sweet time with her overheated coupe.

A decorated vet who paid his dues in Afghanistan, Trace Black can fix anything with an engine and get it revving—even Rafferty's ridiculous sports car. He's couldn't say the same for the knockout driver, who looks like she's never gripped a gear shaft in her life. Women like Rafferty don't usually stick around in Laurel Falls, but Trace finds himself showing her everything his hometown has to offer before she cruises on down the road.

As the days pass, Rafferty finds herself charmed by the pace of life and the openhearted warmth of the residents. She's even tempted to trust again—and it's all thanks to Trace. He's not the kind of guy she's used to falling for, but he just might be the man she needs.

A Laurel Falls Novel
Leaving Yesterday (Book 1)
Maybe Tomorrow (Book 2) *coming October 2016

Leaving Yesterday is the first book in Zoe Dawson's new Laurel Falls series.  This series is set in a little, run-down town in Montana where their residents are warm, friendly, and trying to save their dying hometown.  This is my first book by Zoe Dawson and I'm excited to read more from her!

Rafferty Hamilton needed to get away after signing her divorce papers from her cheating husband.  She needs to regroup and discover herself again.  So rather than fly, she decided to drive cross-country to scope out possible new locations for her family's chain of luxury resorts.  When her custom car breaks down right outside Laurel Falls, she meets sexy ex-Marine/town mechanic Trace Black.  But Mr. Fix-it doesn't have the parts needed to fix her car and they won't arrive for a couple of weeks, so Rafferty is stuck in town until then.

Trace Black is dedicated to his family.  He knows Laurel Falls is just a stop for city-girl Rafferty.  And he also knows better than to fall for someone that is wealthly, thanks to his mother's desertion.  But that doesn't stop him from trying to show this city-girl what a small town like Laurel Falls has to offer and getting to know her in the process.

Rafferty is quickly charmed by this little town and the residents there.  But she isn't in Montana to make friends OR fall in love with a certain man.  So what will happen when her "real" life catches up with her in Laurel Falls...

...and will Trace forgive her for keeping it from him?

His Light in the Dark by L.A. Fiore

Book Description

My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.

I had been four.

Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.

Then we moved.

My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.

Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.

And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.

The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.

But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.

I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.

And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.

But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.

L.A. Fiore is fast becoming one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE AUTHORS!!! Omg.  Her writing takes you on a journey through her book.  Her books make you laugh, cry, angry, broken-hearted, and in the end, grateful for her writing.  Everytime.  His Light in the Darkness left me with a MAJOR book hangover in the best possible way.

When we first meet Mia is seven and Cole is twelve.  It is during these years that sets the foundation for the book and their growing relationship.  Both of them only have their father's; their mother's abandoning them YEARS ago.  But that is where their similarities end.

Cole's father is a nasty, abusive drunk.  While Mia's father is everything a child could want in a father, man, and role model.  Mace Donati.  Mia's father.  Ugh.  LOVED THAT MAN!! The way he took in a broken Cole and showed him how a MAN treats a child (and people in general) made me want to give this man a Nobel Peace Prize.  No joke.  I thought his relationship with Cole was just as important and as big as a part as Cole and Mia's relationship.

While there are times where you literally want to slap the crap out of Cole, you (at least I did) fully understand his motives for keeping his distance from Mia.  And poor Mia, she just didn't understand how and why Cole kept his distance when she KNEW he had feelings for her.  But she doesn't want to give up on the damaged boy that stole her heart all those years ago.

There is no easy way to review this book (for me).  You HAVE to read it to understand that this book is SO MUCH MORE than what the book description tells you.  So. Much. MORE.

Rating: 5+++ out of 5
