The Last One by Tawdra Kandle

Book Description

Meghan Hawthorne is restless. The last year has been a roller coaster: her widowed mother just married a long-time family friend. Her younger brother unexpectedly became a father and a husband. Everyone's life is changing. . .except for hers. As she begins her final summer of college, Meghan's looking for excitement and maybe a little romance. Nothing serious; this girl just wants to have fun. But the only man for Meghan turns out to be the last one she expects.
Sam Reynolds doesn't need excitement, and he doesn't want romance. Fun is out of the question. He's been the steady, responsible one since his parents were killed, and serious is his way of life. When Sam rescues Meghan alongside a dark Georgia backroad, she falls hard for his deep brown eyes and slow drawl. But making him see her as more than just a party girl won't be easy. Sam's tempted by the fiery young artist, even as he realizes that giving into his feelings will mean radical change. . .maybe more than he can handle.
Nobody ever said love was simple.

Sometimes you just have to let loose one night and get ripe roaring drunk.  And that is just what Meghan Hawthorne did after returning to Savannah, Georgia after a visit home.  Meghan and her roommate, Laura (also her DD, no drunk driving in this book [=) head to a new bar about 45 minutes away in Burton.  On the way home, Laura experiences some sort of car trouble and a nice samaritan stops to help.

Sam Reynolds is as serious as they come.  Forced to manage the family farm all on his own (with some help from his younger sister) after his parents died, Sam has no time for fun, romance, dating, etc...  When he sees Laura and Meghan on the side of the road, he is instantly drawn the the drunk Meghan, even though she was sleeping pretty much their whole first interaction.

But their "second" meeting...

Meghan returned to Burton (alone) to pick up her now repaired car.  As she is waiting for her car to be brought up, Sam walks in.  As Meghan begins to thank Sam for helping, Sam RIPS into her for being irresponsible and being a bad friend to Laura.  Meghan storms out determined to forget Sam and the town of Burton for good.

But fate can be a funny bitch sometimes...

Meghan has to return to Burton for the summer when she volunteers for ArtCorps, a program that sends art students to teach in areas that lack art programs.  AND is staying in Sam's house (with his sister and young niece).  From there Sam and Meghan have to learn to communicate with each other without it turning into an epic fight.  And once that happens, even they can no longer deny their chemistry.

But can what was supposed to be a summer only fling turn into more?!
